Canadian heartthrob Justin Bieber unveiled changes to his career-defining hairstyle at the Golden Globe Awards Sunday night. Aileen Donnelly asked the experts to dissect the pop star's new do:

Before

The cut that made him famous consisted of long bangs swept to the side and hair, all one length, covering the ears and nape of the neck. It was a favourite of 14-year-old boys. "I don't think it was age-appropriate anymore in the sense that he's now 16 years old and he needs something with a little more of a mature feel to it," says Montreal celebrity hairstylist Alain Larivee, Canadian creative consultant for the John Frieda hair care line. "You wouldn't catch a 16-year-old boy with the old Bieber hairdo."

- . It naturally lay flat because it was longer and all the same length.

- . The old haircut required less effort. At most, the hairdo required some mousse before blow-drying and a light spray of hairspray to finish.

- . Bieber would usually part his hair to the right, possibly out of necessity. "I have hair like Justin Bieber's -- my hair's cut the same way -- and for me, it's all about what is working better that day. Sometimes I wake up and it's sitting better to one side," Vancouver hairstylist Harry Josh says.

After

- . The new 'do follows the same lines as the old cut but the hair is shorter and more layered. The multiple layers create more texture, which means the new cut can be styled multiple ways with the addition of such hair products as gel.

- . From a hairstylist's point of view, not much has changed, Harry Josh says. In his opinion, there has been more of a change in style than cut.

- . The new cut still has length over the ears but is decidedly shorter throughout. Most notably, the bangs have been shortened as well as layered, putting an end to the hair-in-the-eyes trend. While some of the original softness has been maintained with layering, there is no longer the same "sweepy" feel and the lines are far more square.

- . Toronto stylist Eric Del Monaco, whose work has been featured on Project Runway Canada, predicts the new haircut will be even more of a trendsetter.

- . "I think people were going to ask more for this one because I think it's a lot more fresh looking and it's a lot more interesting."

Justin Bieber and Robert Pattinson used last night's Golden Globe awards in Los Angeles to reveal their brand new stylish hairdos.

Teen pop sensation Bieber is famed for his moptop haircut but yesterday he decided to opt for a more sophisticated do for the annual awards ceremony.

Getting rid of his trademark thick hair that usually sprawls across his forehead, he had his fringe thinned out making him look sharper and sleeker.

Perhaps he wanted to go for a more mature look, given that at 16 he's one of the biggest stars in the world, or perhaps he was trying to minimise opportunities for Golden Globes host Ricky Gervais taking a witty dig at him at his expense.

Wearing a black Dolce and Gabbana tuxedo, and looking like he was finally grown up enough to have a job, the Baby singer showed he wasn't letting go of his young age completely by teaming the smart outfit with a pair of bright white trainers.

The Canadian singer was reporting about the event for TV broadcasters NBC as well as presenting the Golden Globe for the best animated movie.

Clearly excited at the event, he later tweeted: 'Backstage at the Golden Globes. Everyone is here. This is nuts!! Halle Berry was at my table,' before later adding: 'De Niro is the man.'

Twilight hunk R-Pattz also took to the bash sporting his new head of red hair but made sure to keep in his usual dishevelled look so he would at least still be recognisable.

Who rocks their new hairdo better - R-Pattz or Justin Bieber? Scroll down and vote in our poll below.

Speaking to E! Onine, the British actor put losing his brown locks down to his hectic filming schedule: 'I had to keep switching it between two movies' but added he 'thought it was a nice change.'

The 16-year-old musician, wearing black satin three piece tuxedo, white with black button down shirt and black skinny tie all by D&G, will be presenting during the ceremony with nominee Hailee Steinfeld.

Justin shared during a pre-show interview on E! about his upcoming film, “The movie is really inspiring and I hope everyone will be inspired by it.”

Justin also wore a David Yurman Titanium Black Diamond Ring.

OMG!!!!! These pictures are so hot!!

Justin is turning into a man. You can totally see it in these pics. A little too much makeup but hey. Oh wait, didn't he go to the hospital because he was allergic to the CSI makeup?

So what do you think of his new hairdo?

Justin Bieber has confirmed he is more than likely to cut his trademark locks within the next 12 months.

The 16-year-old chart topper set an international trend with his signature forward-swept hair style, but has now says he plans a new look at some point in the future.

Asked whether he intended to trim his hair, Bieber said, 'Some point, probably within a year.'

But the teen singing sensation has no plans for a dramatic new look he told Access Hollywood.

'I'm not gonna like shave it or anything but it will just be different, shorter.'

New Hairstyle For Justin Bieber Next Album

Pop heartthrob Justin Bieber admits he has considered shaving off his trademark hairdo.

The young star insists he does not feel a long-term attachment to his signature look - and is still threatening to break his fans' hearts and cut it all off in the near future.

“I’ve cut this style different ways, but I was thinking about shaving it off or changing it,' he revealed, describing the style as “a Canadian hockey thing”.

'But I know now isn’t the right time. Maybe by my next album.”

Bieber calls himself a “big shoe guy” and says he would love to collaborate with a company to design his own line of shoes. He says he never used to be able to afford many pairs, admitting: “So, now I’m going nuts. Supras are my favorite.

'I just like finding shoes no one else has, exclusives. I love shoes. They’re kind of my thing.'

Demi Lovato told us recently that the littlest Jonas brother, Frankie, has swag like Justin Bieber. And as it turns out, the elder Jonas Brothers, namely Joe, Kevin and Nick, and Justin Bieber are all known for something they have in common, and we're not talking about their bustling careers. We're referring to their incredibly famous and all-important heads of hair. While Bieber is known for his signature swoop, the brothers Jonas are recognized for their curly mops.

This fascinating paralell raised a question: Who has better hair, the Jonas Brothers or Justin Bieber? Their "Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam" co-stars weighed in on this battle for the ages.

Vanessa Price: The Stylist Behind Jusitn Biebers Hair

Ok....everybody freak out, because I've got the scoop on Justin Bieber's fever-inducing mane, straight from the source. Vanessa Price, the creator of his famously floppy, swoopy, shaggy bowl (which is now covering more than one famous head) checked in with us about what it's like to work with the Bieber himself. I had to really restrain myself from asking what his hair feels like (probably spun gold and bunny fur), or if his eyes sparkle magically in real life (probably they do), and a million other questions for the benefit of you crazed Bieber fans, but still I got some good insight!

How long have you been working with Justin?
I met Justin about a year ago, when we were shooting the artwork for his first album, My World. It's been a whirlwind ever since!

What do you guys listen to when you're working together?
When I'm cutting Justin's hair we usually have some music in the background, but I prefer it when he sings to me!

What's it like working with him?
Justin and I always have a lot of fun. He always has a clear idea of what he wants, and I get to execute it and make it look better. It's always been a collaborative project.

Why do you think Justin's hair has become such a "thing"? People are obsessed!
I don't know why people become obsessed with something like a hairstyle! I think it's more about the entire package. He's so handsome, and such a talented young man, so who wouldn't want to look like him! Oh, and the swagger. He's got swagger.

What products do you use in his hair?
Believe it or not, I never use any product in Justin's hair. It just doesn't need it! But for guys wanting to get his look, I might suggest using a texturizer with shine, like Davines' Defining Texturizer or their No. 1 Finest Oil Non-Oil.

Justin Bieber: I May Change My Hair

OMG! I hope this is not true!

Justin told UsMagazine.com he may switch up his famous, side-swept shaggy 'do one day.

"I'm kinda liking the long hair right now. In the future, I may get bored and change it up but for now I like how it is."

The New York Times reported Wednesday that teenage guys are paying $150 to get "The Bieber." (A Manhattan salon owner, Cozy Friedman, says 60 percent of his young male clients ask for the messy hairstyle, but are too embarrassed to ask for it by Bieber's name.)

I told TMZ to stop but they wouldn't.

First they do this:
Justin Bieber and Hilary hair
"Only one of them won an Oscar for playing a female-to-male pre-operative transsexual"

then this:
Rihanna and Justin Bieber Rihanna
"Only one of them had a hit album called "Good Girl Gone Bad."

and now this!!
Justin Bieber hair
"Both have recorded songs with Ludacris."

So I made something for TMZ:

Both of them use conditioner.

Only one of them need conditioner.

He might have hit superstardom as a YouTube sensation turned Tween dream–but if there’s one thing that Justin Bieber is known for as much as his music, it’s his perfectly shaggy do.

But despite appearances, the singer tells T Magazine, he doesn’t have to work at it. “I’d love to be able to say it was complicated, but I’m just chilling,” he says. “My hair takes five minutes to do in the morning. I shower and as soon as I get out I just shake it and it just does that. For real.”

That’s not to say that there isn’t a little friendly coif competition in the air. Probed about who would win going head-to-head against similarly well-groomed star (and originator of

the boy bangs) Zac Efron, he brushes off the comparison: “I’ll let you decide. But all I’ll say is that it’s no competition.”

ZIMBIO

Ok, so who's hair style do you prefer? Zac's or JB's?
